The Joker is a character from the Batman comic-book series. He’s certainly the most famous of Batman’s foes, and he has a good claim to being the greatest comic-book villain of all time. The Clown Prince of Crime (as he called himself in his campy 1960s incarnation) could probably get away with calling himself a legitimate cultural icon.Like most of the Batman rogue’s gallery, his origin has been retold a few different times, and some of the details have never been filled in – he’s never received a real name, for instance. In the most popular version of the story, however, he was a small-time criminal who fell into a vat of toxic chemicals during a heist gone bad. The accident gave him his bizarre appearance and left him irrevocably insane. Jack Nicholson’s famous film version tends a bit towards the latter interpretation (with a touch of the humor from Cesar Romero’s TV performance). By contrast, Heath Ledger’s re-invention of the character in The Dark Knight is way over on the “pure evil” end of the spectrum.
